However, despite his ulterior motive for profit, he does have a genuine care about the safety of others, though that usually doesn't stop him from accepting a reward for a small deed of kindness and concern. He offers to recommend his mistress more competent bodyguards; however, Sebas declines twice his offer. Despite their disagreement about Zach's trustworthiness, the aged butler thanks the merchant for his consideration. He was a friend of Ascheriit, and one of the few members of the 7 Heroes to understand what the brutality of their acts would bring upon them all. After be becoming a hero, he appears to have been corrupted, possibly by his guilt, and he started living lavishly, consumed by anger and envy against Glenn for not being granted constructions of war airships, and secretly turned his fortress into a flying castle armed with Wischtech engines of destruction. After Schtemwolech's death he grew increasingly paranoid and fearful that even the slightest thing could be an attempt to his life. So paranoid he was, he sends his army to attack the city of Jullas-Abllas, accusing its citizens of supporting Koinzell. Ironically, his actions actually made the citizens support Koinzell and fight against his army. In the end, his own men betrayed him and left him, a fact that finally drove him completely insane. When Koinzell caught up, Barestar believed they were back in the war at a point where Koinzell had saved him. He sadly asked Koinzell to help him get back to his home and his family. Seeing such a thing, Koinzell killed him while in his stupor, as an act of pity. Barestar is currently the only one of the Seven Heroes that Ascheriit shows slight remorse for killing. Of the Seven Deadly Sins, he represents Greed, as shown by his jealousy of Glenn's weapons and army, and his desire to have it all for himself.".

After Cross defected from Stea post-timeskip, Barisu took his place as commander of Shin. However, it wasn't long before Miko uploaded her consciousness into the Shin, taking over Barisu's body and using his body to still maintain control of those on-board without revealing her nature as the Shin itself. After the Archadian Empire conquered their homeland, Basch fled to Dalmasca, becoming a prominent and beloved member of the Kingdom. When Archadia attacked Nalbina Fortress, Basch led the defense. He, along with Lord Rasler Heios Nabradia, valiantly defended the fortress against the invading armies of Archadia. However, the Archadian forces proved too much for them to handle. Basch was the one responsible for carrying Lord Rasler from the field of battle after he was mortally wounded by an arrow to the chest. After the Archadian occupation, he and Captain Azelas led an assault on Nalbina Fortress in an attempt to save the king, only to be captured by Imperial forces. As part of Vayne's plot to frame Basch, Noah, now called Gabranth, posed as Basch and slew the Dalmascan king and Vaan's older brother, Reks, who witnessed the crime. As a result, Basch is regarded by the Dalmascans as a traitor, and was stated to have been executed by Marquis Ondore. In reality, Basch was imprisoned alive in the Nalbina Dungeons by Vayne as a means of ensuring Ondore's loyalty to the Empire—if Ondore betrayed the Empire, Vayne could announce Basch's continued survival to make him appear to be the Empire's puppet and destroy the Marquis' credibility. He was eventually freed by Vaan, Balthier, and Fran who were trying to escape Nalbina dungeons. Though all three were initially suspicious of him, Vaan in particular, the party did catch a look at Gabranth's face, lending credibility to Basch's story that he had been framed. After the escape, he vowed to protect Ashe and help the resistance, in spite of his past failures. He remained loyal as well, despite the resistance's mistrust. It was Basch's devotion to honor despite everything else that most puzzled his twin, Gabranth, and was the source of the division between them. After the final battle against Vayne, as Noah was dying, he asked his brother to protect Larsa in his place to ensure peace. Because of the common belief that Captain Fon Ronsenberg was dead, Basch easily took over his brother's stead as "Judge Magister Gabranth" to be the protector of the new Emperor Larsa Solidor.".

Although his original intention is to steal the Eto Gun from Mingchao and use it against the leader of the Syndicate, he grows close to Mingchao and teams up with her to fight the Syndicate. Baskerville's real name is Razy Bone, and he's a member of the Syndicate. In the past, he had a little sister, Chisel. She was sick, so he worked for the Syndicate to find the Eto Gun. In return, they would give him medicine to feed to his sister. The "medicine" was actually a narcotic and eventually killed her. Baskerville overheard the highest ranking members discussing how they knew the drug was fatal, and how they intended for Chisel to die. Baskerville thus plotted revenge while remaining a member of the Syndicate, and set out to find the Eto Gun, disguising himself as a priest. At one point he loses his memory when a mine collapses on him, and he was separated from Mingchao for quite some time. His amnesia was accompanied by massive headaches, and Cavanaugh, posing as a friend, began feeding him the very medicine that killed his sister. However, Baskerville regains his memory and rejoins Mingchao in their journey to New York City. Baskerville is also one of those who can use the Eto Gun after having the symbol branded on his palm while retrieving the gun from a hot furnace.".

Among other things, it wants Guts to kill Casca so that he can get back to seeking revenge. The fact that in the past (volume 5, chapter 3: Wind of Swords) Casca shouted in anger to Guts that he is just a "mad dog" it is probably the reason why his inner beast is represented as the Hellhound. When Guts uses the Berserker armor, the helmet appears very similar to the Hellhound's head. The Hellhound appears to be strengthened by repeated use of the armor, but is held in check by Guts' affection and loyalty for his companions. These two forces are constantly at odds: in his latest appearance, the Hellhound seemed larger and stronger than ever, but was bound by thick chains. However the Hellhound has vowed should the time come when Guts was too weak to subdue him, the Hellhound would break free and take over Guts and kill all those Guts held dear.".
