Asch's improvised excuse was, "My hair grows fast." Most of what Asch does is the "behind the scenes" work - though works towards the same goal as Luke and friends. However, most of the time, he outright refuses to work with them. At the end of the game, he even fought Luke over who would fight Van. Asch openly despises Luke as the person who replaced him. He hates how Luke considers himself (as the clone) to be the inferior one, as not only is he a copy of Asch (and Asch has a tremendous amount of pride) but he was the one who essentially usurped Asch's life with no effort whatsoever. He also considers them rivals in swordsmanship as they are both pupils of Van. Although he thinks that Luke is supposed to be his replacement, and thus the same as him, there are many things in the game that say otherwise. Perhaps the most obvious of these is that Luke's hair is light at the ends, and Asch's is darker. Their clothing is also like this, with Luke's white and gold contrasting with Asch's black and silver. Yet another difference between them is that Luke is left handed, and Asch is right handed. Also, as Luke gradually changes throughout the game, Asch always stays the same. Luke and Asch fought (due to Asch's stubbornness) at the end of the game to settle the issue over who the "real" Luke was. In the end, Luke did win, yet Asch still thought of Luke as his replica. One of his last actions was to take his name back as his own, as a small step in accepting Luke, and acknowledging that he wasn't inferior. Upon his death, he gave Luke some of his power, allowing Luke to use second-order hyperresonance (and to fully control it at that). It gave Luke the power he needed to finally defeat Sync and Van. • ascot comment "Ascot is a Palu, a young child with the unusual ability to summon monsters, whom he considers to be his friends. Although hideous, they have no ill will, but villagers still fear them. Thus, Ascot was driven away until Zagato offered to give him and his friends a home in exchange for serving under him. In the anime, he destroys Presea's house with his monsters, and essentially causes her death; later, he confronts the Knights again (their first encounter in the manga), but Umi slaps him for using his friends and causing them pain. This causes a change of heart in Ascot, and he then forsakes Zagato. In the second series, he has used the power of his own will to make himself into an adult because of his love for Umi. Also, he still summons monsters but has learned other spells from Clef to avoid using his friends as living weapons. In the anime he is able to tell Umi his feelings before she leaves to fight Tarta. Umi replies that she loves him as well, but just as much as everyone else in Cephiro, and that she didn't have any romantic feelings for him. Appearing suddenly in Ichigo Kurosaki's bedroom, just as Ichigo inquires about Ryūnosuke Yuki's name, Ebern responds instead and declares his own full name, before asking if there were any other questions. Firmly told by Ichigo to get off of his bed, Ebern refuses to comply despite Ichigo repeating himself and so, is kicked out of the window. As Ebern holds his head outside and wonders why he was struck, Ichigo demands to know what business he has with him, but Ebern appears confused. Drawn away from Ichigo's house, Ebern denies being an Arrancar upon being questioned and attempts to show himself as a Quincy. Forming a large weapon, he asks Ichigo if his powers seemed familiar. Taunting Ichigo as he attacks, Ebern becomes elated when Ichigo finally activates his Bankai, noting to himself that it will be the end of the Substitute Shinigami's Bankai. After preparing a special technique and reciting an incantation, he manages to damage Ichigo's arm, but Ichigo quickly breaks free from the attack and fires a Getsuga Tenshō towards a stunned Ebern. As the smoke clears, a heavily wounded Ebern furiously wonders why Ichigo's Bankai did not vanish but is surprised by Ichigo from behind, pointing his blade at side of his face. Ichigo states that he is taking Ebern back for questioning but Ebern escapes by using a shadow and informs Ichigo that it only hides the "chosen ones". While kneeling in front of his leader, an injured Ebern witnesses the death of Luders Friegen. His superior states that he can neither blame nor praise Ebern as while he did not defeat Ichigo, he slowed him enough to prevent any intervention.
