Sometime after Luke's conversation with Nephry regarding her brother, Jade confesses to Luke that he still fails to understand what it means for someone to die. He was, however, significantly changed by his teacher, Dr. Nebilim, a healer who commanded the Seventh Fonon, which Jade could not command himself. Though he had great respect for his teacher, Jade attempted to cast a spell using the seventh fonon, but instead unleashed a power beyond his control that resulted in the death of Nebilim. As Nebelim lay dying, Jade extracted her data and created a replica of her, though rather than resurrecting his beloved teacher, he only succeeded in creating a monster which he found himself forced to destroy. At some time after these painful events, Jade's talents in fonic artes and fomicry were recognized, and he was adopted into House Curtiss, a family of high position within the Malkuth military. Jade was eventually convinced to cease his endeavours with Fomicry by his close friend, Emperor Peony the Ninth, who spent his childhood years in Jade's hometown of Keterburg. It is also revealed that Jade forbade the practice of Fomicry on living organisms due to both ethical and technical issues arising from the subject. Dist (also one of Nebilim's students), however, still didn't accept Nebilim's death. His dream was to see Jade return to normal, and help him resurrect her again. However, Jade had always refused, and often opted to make fun of Dist instead. He introduces himself as "Colonel Jade Curtiss, Third Division, Malkuth Imperial Forces." He doesn't ever refer to himself as Jade the Necromancer (his given nickname that arose due to his habit of scavenging corpses after a battle), but acknowledges others when they call him the Necromancer. Personality Jade is at first mostly an enigma, his teasing smile always hiding his true thoughts. Often, when the actions of those around him are less than thought through, Jade uses sarcasm to show that he disapproves. Other than amusement, Jade rarely shows signs of any emotions at all, though occasionally they get out of his control. Deep inside, Jade feels guilty for all the people he has killed, especially Professor Neblim. Abilities Jade could be considered the strongest character in Tales of the Abyss, given all of his powerful Fonic artes. When Luke first encounters him, Jade is Level 45, with artes like Blessed Drops and Ground Dasher. Largo the Black Lion (a God-General), however, uses a fon slot seal to seal Jade's Fonic artes. Jade's Level is immediately dropped to 5 and he loses all his artes except Energy Blast and Sonic Spear. His increases in level, therefore, actually represent how much of the fon slot seal he has undone. Through leveling up, Jade gains one high-tier Fonic arte for each element but light and darkness: the aforementioned Blessed Drops and Ground Dasher and Thunder Blade and Infernal Prison. Through sidequests, however, Jade can also learn Absolute, Prism Sword, and Meteor Storm. Later in the manga series Jadeite and the other Shitennou would appear in visions to Endymion to counsel and advise him in times of trouble. In the anime, Jadeite's mission was essentially the same as in the manga though expanded to cover a number of new plots. He was subservient to Beryl to a fault and endured each successive punishment for his failures with the resolve to reform his tactics to better please the queen. He was also considerably more sexist against women in the anime than in the manga, often remarking how women and girls could not match his power nor comprehend his methods. However, this sexist attitude would only be toned down in the English dub, in favor of a rivalry between him and the Scouts instead. In the dubbed Episode 12, he even flirts with "Serena" where he had not done so in the original vesion. nevitably his failures led to the Queen's loss of faith in Jadeite and he was issued an ultimatum: destroy the Sailor Senshi or face the punishment of Eternal Sleep. Jadeite poured all his effort into the final assault, threatening the destruction of Tokyo should the Senshi not agree to his duel. In a final showdown Jadeite threw down Tuxedo Mask and very nearly succeeded in destroying the Senshi though in the end their teamwork and a well-placed curse from Rei rendered Jadeite the victim of his own trap. Upon returning to the Dark Kingdom with the news that he had learned the secret identities of the Senshi on his lips, Queen Beryl encased him in an impenetrable ice crystal and condemned him to his restless Eternal Sleep. He is not seen again, and is presumably still encased in crystal after the end of the story arc. He wears dark pants with knee guards on his knees and dark boots with a ripped sleeveless vest. He has a type of joints inside his right leg and an eye patch over his right eye due to his injuries from Saiga in the past. He's sometimes seen smoking a cigarette. James is comically shown to be rather dishonorable and arrogant, to the point where Akisame mentions that "even Yami would not accept him for his arrogance" (though his opinion is arguably biased due to a mustache grudge he carries against James). Such is seen in the disciple race between him and Akisame, during which he flicks a Pachinko ball at Kenichi's head and causes him to fall over, taking advantage of this to give Takeda the lead. The other example is his refusal to cut off his own mustache despite the bet, by exploiting the wording of the bet and shaving only a few hairs off and then escaped by jumping onto the nearby bullet train. James is also not above taking advantage of Takeda, having him fight in betting matches in order to supplement his own income and becomes quite wealthy because of it. James also keeps various pets and names his moves after them, such as the Giant Cat Eye Frog Punch, named after a frog with cat eyes. He apparently hates being called "Sensei" as he punches Takeda as soon as he calls him "Sensei". During Takeda's fight with Kenichi, James is shown to care about Takeda by forfeiting the match claiming that it is foolish to break his source of money and forgetting the bet of cutting off his mustache if he lost (comically in a seppuku style), which he blatantly and arrogantly refused after being reminded of it. Like Takeda, James's best punch is left straight, the knowledge of which helps form a bond between the disciple and master. James' mustache and beard also indicate his mood: when they point downward, he is in a neutral or bad mood; when they point upward, he is excited. He also made Takeda wear restraints that exercised his boxing muscles, making his training methods similar to Akisame's due to how hellish it is. A young James Shiba believed that boxing was the strongest martial art, and participated frequently in underground bouts. Though he manages to make a name for himself quickly and conveniently, everything crashes around him when he loses in a fight with Fuurinji Saiga, supposedly making him die as a martial artist and laying him to waste for several years.".
